Veteran's Day Weekend — November 9-11, 2013

Join the Vietnam Women's Memorial Foundation as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Women's Memorial. Plans are underway for a series of events to commemorate this extraordinary landmark event. The weekend before Veterans Day is a perfect time to gather with friends and to hold reunions. Official events begin on Saturday the 9th of November. Rooms and suites are available at the Washington Marriott for a reduced rate—book online or call 877-212-5752 to make a reservation. Check back for news of even more plans and events that may appear for the 8th and 9th also!

Friday, November 8th:

  • Time TBD: Army Special Services Hospitality Suite, Embassy Suites Hotel, Downtown
  • 1 p.m.: American Red Cross Memorial Service in the Memorial Garden of the ARC Headquarters

Saturday, November 9th:

  • 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.: StoryCorps, Oral History Program, Embassy Suites Hotel, Downtown
  • Time TBD: Army Special Services Hospitality Suite, Embassy Suites Hotel, Downtown
  • 12 p.m.: Army Special Services Reunion Luncheon, place TBD (contact Ann Kelsey for information, kelsey@openix.com)
  • 4 p.m.: Shuttle buses start running between Embassy Suites Hotel and Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington for the 6 p.m. performance of A Piece of My Heart. Click here for detailed bus information.
  • 4:30 p.m.: Reception at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington Cemetery
  • 6 p.m.: Shirley Lauro's play "A Piece of My Heart" at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington Cemetery, Infinite Variety Productions
  • Shuttle buses will run following the play going to the Arlington National Cemetery Metro Stop and the Embassy Suites Hotel Downtown. The last bus leaves the Women's Memorial around one hour following the end of the performance PM.

Sunday, November 10th: Memorial

  • 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.: StoryCorps, Oral History Program, Embassy Suites Hotel, Downtown

  • 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Vietnam Women's Memorial Foundation Giftshop opens at the Washington Embassy Suites Hotel, Downtown
  • 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.Reunion of the 312th Evacuation Hospital and 91st Evacuation Hospital (Chu Lai) at the Washington Embassy Suites Hotel, Downtown
  • 11 a.m.: Presentation of a wreath commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Vietnam Women's Memorial by Wall Volunteers. Ceremony is at the Vietnam Women's Memorial.
  • 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.: Reunion of Vietnam nurse veterans from northern Midwest and Plains states. VWMF Hospitality Suite.
  • 1 p.m.: Shuttle buses will run a loop between the Embassy Suites Hotel and the Women's Memorial and between the Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop and the Women's Memorial until the performance starts at 2 p.m. Following the performance shuttles will run between the Women's Memorial and the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop and the Embassy Suites hotel.   • 2 p.m.: Shirley Lauro's play "A Piece of My Heart" at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington Cemetery, Infinite Variety Productions
  • A shuttle bus will be available between the Metro stop at Arlington Cemetery and WIMSA before and after the play. Another will be available between The Embassy Suites Hotel and WIMSA before and after the play. A shuttle bus will also transport playgoers directly to the National Mall if they wish to participate in the activites at the Vietnam Women's Memorial that evening.
  • 5 p.m.: Reading of the Names of women who served during the Vietnam era and who have passed takes place at the Vietnam Women's Memorial.
  • 6 p.m.: Candlelight Ceremony at the Vietnam Women's Memorial on the National Mall
  • 8 p.m.DMZ to Delta Dance, Holiday Inn Alexandria, SW

Monday, November 11th:

  • 8:30 a.m.: Storytelling at the Vietnam Women's Memorial: In Their Own Words

  • 12:30 p.m.: Performance by Jan Daley, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Jan entertained the troops in Vietnam, with Bob Hope.
  • 1:00 p.m.: Veterans Day Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Seating will be available for women veterans.
  • 2:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Storytelling continues at the Vietnam Women's Memorial until about 4:30 p.m.

StoryCorps returns to offer women the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of their experience. Interview slots are limited so contact us early to schedule your interview. Interviews are typically conducted by one of your friends or family members making this an especially meaningful experience.

Giftshop

The Vietnam Women's Memorial Giftshop will be open November 10th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. During this time special gifts representing the Vietnam Women's Memorial, and honoring the women who served will be available. On this day all sales at the giftshop will receive a 10% discount! All purchasers will receive a special limited edition Vietnam Women's Memorial tote bag or backpack with their purchase, as long as they last! Be sure to stop by for your special treat! All bags require a purchase. The shop will be at the Anniversary host hotel, The Washington Embassy Suites, Downtown on 22nd street between M and N streets NW. Popular items at the giftshop include notecards, postcards, posters (tubes will be available), Not all women wore lovebeads T-shirts, Denim shirts, bookmarks, and the popular Emmy winning DVD "Vietnam Nurses with Dana Delaney". The VWMF will conduct a Reading of the Names of women who served during the Vietnam era and who have died at 5 p.m., Sunday the 10th at the Vietnam Women's Memorial. If you know of women who have died, please forward their names to us so that we can ensure they are included in this special tribute.

Storytelling

Storytelling at the Vietnam Women's Memorial: In Their Own Words is a program of speakers scheduled throughout the day. Speakers are scheduled at 15 to 20 minute intervals. Speakers may be women who served, family or friends, school children, or anyone who has a message. Contact the VWMF if you are interested.

Saturday, November 9th Shuttle bus schedule for the play, A Piece of My Heart:

  • 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.: Embassy Suites Hotel to the Women's Memorial (WIMSA) at Arlington Cemetery. Depending on traffic, the last bus to WIMSA will leave at 5:30 p.m.
  • 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.: Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop to the Women's Memorial (WIMSA). Shuttle will run in a continuous loop. The last bus will leave the metro stop around 5:45 p.m.
  • For one hour following end of the performance the shuttle bus will run a continuous loop between the Women's Memorial and the Arlington National Cemetery Metro Stop.
  • From the end of the play to 9:30 p.m. a shuttle bus will run between the Women's Memorial and the Embassy Suites Hotel. The last bus will leave WIMSA around 9:30 p.m.

Sunday, November 10th, Shuttle bus schedule for the play A Piece of My Heart and to the Candlelight Ceremony at the Vietnam Women's Memorial:

  • 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Embassy Suites Hotel to the Women's Memorial (WIMSA) at Arlington Cemetery. Depending on traffic, the last bus may leave at 1:30 pm.
  • 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop to the Women's Memorial (WIMSA). The bus will run a continuous loop. Plan on the last bus leaving the Metro by 5:45 p.m.
  • Following the play until about 4:30 p.m. shuttle to Embassy Suites hotel. Plan on the last bus leaving WIMSA around 4:30 p.m.
  • For 1 hour following the end of the play a shuttle will loop between WIMSA and the Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop.
  • Following the play a shuttle will move between WIMSA and the National Mall to an area near the Vietnam Women's Memorial. There will be walking involved to get to the Memorial. This will enable playgoers to get to Reading of the Names at 5 p.m. and the Candlelight Ceremony at 6 p.m.

RIDERS PLEASE NOTE: Shuttle buses are not wheelchair accessible. Drivers and volunteers will assist those needing help to get on and off the buses.
